A hat to celebrate 15 years of Vintage Purls as a business. Everything about this pattern happens in multiples of 15. It’s a wonderful way to use up small quantities of yarn – use five colours as written or use more (or fewer). Different colour combinations will give you very different looking hats – that’s the beauty of colourwork. In the fine tradition of Fair Isle, there are no floats longer than five stitches in this design and only two colours are used at any one row.
Knit in the round from the bottom to the top. This hat fits a 56cm (22″) head. The instructions include directions for altering the size and the length to your preference.
The pattern includes a “colour your own” version of the chart so you can design your own unique hat depending on the yarn you want to use.
Materials
- Vintage Purls Tannahill (100% New Zealand Merino, 396 metres per 100g skein) in 5 colours.
In total, the hat uses about 56g/222m of TannaHill for the slouchy version pictured.
It is advisable to have 20g/80m each of colours A – D and 10g/40m of colour E to be confident that you have enough to complete the pattern as written.
Tannahill is a woolen spun yarn and its meterage per skein is higher than some fingering yarns of the same weight, please consider this when using other yarns (use the meterage specifications, rather than the weight when planning your substitutions).
- 3.25mm 40cm needle or size that gives you gauge. Also double point needles or a long circular for magic loop in the same size.
- 2.75mm 40cm needle for ribbed band (or a needle two sizes smaller than the needle your are using for the body of the hat.)
- A stitch marker.
Gauge
28 stitches and 33 rows in 10cm (4″) in blocked stranded stocking stitch.
It is perfectly reasonable to start knitting the hat without a swatch and to stop and block it after a few inches to check gauge. Just be prepared to rip back and start again if your gauge is off.
Yarn Substitution
It is important (for a good fit) to use a non-superwash, mostly wool yarn for this project. If you wish to knit it in a machine-washable yarn be aware that it will grow significantly with washing, you would be advised to swatch and experiment with your specific yarn to achieve the correct gauge after blocking.
